More and more people outside our borders are enjoying peppernuts. For example, we have had stores in Germany and Belgium for several years and some supermarkets sell it there as well. Especially in the border areas, the Germans and Belgians know our delicacy well. There they are also simply called peppernuts . A German's favorite flavors are the Truffle and Stroopwafel peppernuts.

But our peppernuts also travels longer distances. For example, there are stores in Norway, Sweden, France and Spain. And even in Japan, our peppernuts will soon be on sale.

A Dutch person eats an average of 395 Peppernuts per year. If you assume that a peppercorn weighs about 1.5 grams, you're easily at 592.5 grams per person. Yummy!

Our factory bakes about 8 out of 10 Peppernuts eaten in the Netherlands. So big chance that you are eating a real Van Delft Peppernuts!

Although our name suggests otherwise, our factory does indeed make Peppernuts. Peppernut is actually the original name of the cookie. It is the family name under which all kinds of Peppernuts fall. One of them is the spiced nut, which you see a lot of nowadays. But still we stick to the name pepernoot. That's the popular name that also appears in many songs. It's much nicer. Kruidnoot sounds anonymous to us.

The distinction actually came about around the 1970s, to indicate that there were more spices in the spiced nut than in the original peppernut. The cookie was then called spiced peppercorn, so it just belongs to the peppercorn family. We still have the old packaging!

The Dikke van Dale even calls it synonyms of each other already, but as far as we are concerned, everyone can decide for themselves.

Locally produced with ingredients of international allure. Those are the exclusive Van Delft peppernuts , celebrating the 140th anniversary of the Harderwijk-based company. The limited edition gold and dark variety is both precious and exclusive. The 400 handmade peppernuts cost 100 euros per box (ten pieces).

The recipe is a co-production of Van Delft and Rik Jansma, chef of Harderwijk's star restaurant Basiliek. ,,As the market leader in peppernuts we wanted to live up to our name with a special peppernut. In our anniversary year, we are also going for the most expensive peppernut. We work with the best and rarest ingredients, from almost every continent something, made by one of the better Michelin star chefs in the Netherlands. In short, the best of everything," said Oscar de Lange, director at Van Delft.

King among spices
Jansma had quite a challenge not only to look for the best ingredients, but also to have them on time. ,,For example, the white truffle from Umbria (Italy) is only available in November and December. Dekopon citrus is a sweet mandarin from Japan, red saffron comes from the Middle East and is the king among spices: hand-picked stems of the crocus flower. Vanilla from Madagascar is also a precious spice."
The exclusive peppernut is wrapped in wafer-thin edible gold leaf.

The dark variety contains Kopi Loewak (the civet cat coffee bean) from Bali, whose intense flavor makes it known as the most expensive coffee in the world. Handmade pure cloves from Sri Lanka, black truffle from Umbria and organic pineapple flown in from Ivory Coast also make the peppernut a taste sensation. ''For the optimal taste experience of these fresh ingredients, it's best to eat them right away,'' Jansma laughs.

De Lange calls the end result "super cool. ,,This handmade peppernut with a totally different taste experience gives us new inspiration again to develop it further next year and make it accessible to a larger audience."

The peppernuts are available in deluxe gift packs. Twenty jars of each flavor containing ten pieces are available. De Lange sees them as collectors' items. A number of Dutch celebrities have already caught on. ,,We have already pre-sold ten boxes and will bring them to the BN'ers personally."

We are celebrating our 140th anniversary this year! To celebrate this anniversary in style, we are introducing the Golden Tickets. Ten of them, in total. These ten Golden Tickets are hidden in the golden bags with Luxe Mix peppernuts. The lucky winners of the coveted Golden Tickets will receive a unique tour of our new chocolate factory as well as a year's free peppernuts. Those who are sweet get goodies...

In 1880, Jan van Delft invented the peppernut as we know it: the smallest and also the most widely eaten cookie with the longest history in the world. With his progressive eye, Van Delft soon invested in one of the first conveyor belt ovens. Thus was born the one and only peppernut: a spicy, crispy ball with a flat bottom.

Since then, the unprecedented popularity of the peppernut has only been increasing: in the past 5 years, Van Delft opened special pepernoten stores throughout the Netherlands selling an assortment of no less than 60 flavors of luxury (especially) chocolate peppernuts with special flavors such as caramel-salt, truffle-cinnamon and extra cacao Belgian chocolate... and the big public favorite the stroopwafel chocolate kruidnoot.

Where the success of the special chocolate peppercorns comes from? Van Delft-Director Oscar de Lange: "We see a growing need for authenticity and coziness. The aromatic smell and taste of peppernuts are then quickly associated with that. We also notice that people love the shopping experience we offer, with the excessively wide choice of 60 delicious surprising makes, with enthusiastic friendly staff, the rich history of the oldest cookie in the world and of the company Van Delft, the beautiful gift boxes making it a pleasure to give and receive it as a gift and finally the opportunity to taste the many flavors."

Meanwhile, we are not standing still and have invested heavily in the future. The result: a brand-new chocolate factory with a gigantic chocolate plant, the largest in all of Europe. The process of chocolate making is a fine art. The new chocolate factory is therefore a milestone in the rich history of Van Delft. Thanks to innovative technologies, the new chocolate factory in Harderwijk produces top quality chocolate for our famous Van Delft-peppernuts in a stunning way. Not only the taste, but also the environment has been considered: the new production approach saves Van Delft 2,500 truck trips in emissions on an annual basis.

This year, the 140-billionth peppernut also rolls off the line at our company. That, together with the company's 140th anniversary and the new chocolate factory, is reason enough for a celebration. The lucky winners who pull out the ten coveted Golden Tickets from a golden bag peppernuts will each be treated to a unique tour of the special chocolate and peppernut factory and can also count on free peppernuts for a year*.
