About Van Delft

History

We are the oldest and largest factory of the most famous Dutch cookie, the pepernoot! Ever since 1880 we have been the 'purveyor of Sinterklaas'. Of every 100 Peppernuts sold in the Netherlands, about 75 come from our bakery. And that's quite a lot; all together, the Dutch eat over 7 billion Peppernuts. Every year again.

In 1880 Jan van Delft started Van Delft Biscuits in Koog aan de Zaan. And in the same street where Albert Heijn and Verkade also opened their first store. In 1958, the bakery moved to its current location in Harderwijk. Van Delft was one of the first bakers with a conveyor belt oven for the production of peppernuts. "This made us the largest and oldest peppernut factory in the world. Growth through innovation is still our common thread," says Oscar de Lange, director and owner. "New products are added every year."

The beginning

In 1880, Jan van Delft started his own bakery in Koog aan de Zaan, where he experimented with authentic recipes with skill and entrepreneurial spirit and soon specialized in artisanal peppernuts. These humble beginnings laid the foundation for a growing family business, whose name Van Delft is still synonymous with quality and timeless delicacies.

The first assembly line

The first industrial assembly line was introduced in 1902, in this way a craft can be transformed into industry. The famous peppernut is made faster than ever.

In the war

At the risk of their lives, Van Delft employees work to make emergency rations for the army of both the Allies and the Netherlands itself.

Small gesture, big meaning

In the spring of 1945, Johannes van Delft Jr. donated this silver sugar spoon with Golden Coach motif and the inscription "In gratitude March 18-19, 1945" to Ada Vis-Duyvis, who had hidden it under her bathroom floorboards during a German invasion. The spoon embodies her courage and the strength of personal solidarity in hard times.

Transportation in the 1950s

This photo shows a typical Van Delft from the mid-1950s, bearing the distinctive logo. With such reliable trucks, Van Delft delivered freshly baked delicacies directly to stores throughout the Netherlands on a daily basis, which not only guaranteed freshness but also strengthened brand awareness.

New chapter

The move to Harderwijk took place in 1958. Here not much later it is also announced that Van Delft has the longest conveyor belt oven in the Netherlands. At this location, much goes on.

A first

An important moment in Van Delft's history was the introduction of the first peppernut peppernut in 1990: An instant hit. With the skillful combination of crunchy peppernut and velvet chocolate, it surprised lovers and brought to life a new star within the range.

Stores

In the year 2014, Van Delft opened its very first peppercorn store in Amsterdam and it proved to be an instant hit: the store was wildly popular. From then on, growth took off and Van Delft expanded at an unprecedented pace.

Present

Van Delft now sells more than 7 billion peppernuts annually in more than 50 flavors, from classic cinnamon to surprising limited editions.
